Submission Guidelines

All submissions are to be in digital format following these guidelines:

·   Maximum image size: 9 inches, tall or wide, at 72dpi resolution.

·   Saved as a JPEG, high quality (6-8 on Photoshop's scale).

·   The filename of your entry should begin with the category number, then a hyphen (-), then the title of the image. For example: 02-House Fire or 06-Out At First.

·   Please use double digits for all numbers, especially in the photo essay category   ("02" instead of just "2")

·   In the CAPTION field of the file's File Info box, enter the entry's caption information. (Your name MUST NOT appear in this field.)

·   So that we know they're your entries, please submit them in a folder or directory bearing your name.   You also need to include your name in the BYLINE field inside the File Info box.

·   For photo essay entries, all filenames should be identical, with the sequence information at the end. For example, 05-kid with disease 01 of 12, 05-kid with disease 02 of 12, etc.   Remember to use two digits for the sequence number to avoid problems with the order in which you would like them to appear.

·   For Photographer of the Year entries, all filenames should consist of two random letters (not your initials!), be identical, with the sequence information at the end. For example, 01-WG 01 of 102, 01-WG 02 of 102, etc.

·   Entry deadline is 10:00 pm, Saturday, February 9, 2008.

·   Your entries will only be accepted on CD's and must be delivered in person or by mail to:

Judging
Some of the top talent in photojournalism from around the country will be judging this year's contest.   Judges from previous years have won the Pulitzer Prize or national photographers of the year awards.   Many of our judges are Directors of Photography or Photo Editors for major news agencies.   This year will be no exception.

Categories

1. Photographer of the Year
A portfolio of ten single photographs and one photo essay. Excellence in a variety of situations and subjects or a consistent style is important.

2. Spot News
A photograph of an unscheduled event for which no advance planning was possible. (fire, flood, etc.)

3. General News
A photograph of a scheduled political, social, or cultural event for which advance planning was possible. (Courtrooms, demonstrations, entertainment and promotional events.)

4. Feature
An unposed photograph, typically of a situation found in daily life.

5. Photo Essay
A series of photographs that tell a story.

6. Sports Action
A sports photograph with an emphasis on athletics and the commitment it takes to compete.

7. Sports Feature
An unposed sports-related photograph.

8. Portrait
A photograph of a person that reveals the essence of the subject. Entries may have been posed.

9. Illustration
A photograph or digitally manipulated photograph to illustrate a story, idea, product, food, fashion, etc.

10. Multimedia
Entries can be video or audio slideshows that you have produced for the web. To enter send us a still photo from the project using the same guidelines as the other categories, with one exception. In the CAPTION field in file info put a link to the url of the project where the judges can see it. In this category we will not worry about your name or what paper you work for appearing. Basically we don't want you to have to reedit a video just for the contest. Also if more than one person worked on the piece please include their name with yours in the BYLINE field in file info (ie if you shot the photos, but the audio was gathered by the reporter, or if you shot the video but another person edited it.) If you have any questions please email: elucero@hjnews.com

Prizes
The corporate office in Seattle has been gracious to award $100 to the winner of each category. So this is even more incentive to enter.
