For All The Marbles

Players have some “old time” fun at the Wild West Marbles Tournament.
Nine-year-old Hunter Erickson came all the way from Kentucky to defend his title. After eyeing the competition and presuming that his brother Connor, 11, would be the one to beat, he began to go over his game plan.
“I just flick it and I usually hit them and if I don’t I usually just try to get them the next time,” he explained.
The Wild West Marbles Tournament brought young and old alike to the Jensen Historical Farm at the American West Heritage Center last week. Playing marbles on the grounds of the 1917 farm has its obstacles: Try concentrating on picking off that beautiful glass marble as chickens, peacocks and turkeys wander through your playing field.
“Boys played marbles in the year 1917; not too many girls unless they were tomboys. But they would have marble tournaments and they’d trade marbles and they’d just have a good old time. It was a very popular game back then,” said AWHC staff member Rosie Johnson.
“I’m creaming him (Hunter) this time,” Connor boasted as the tournament began.
In the end it was Hunter and Connor’s other brother, 11-year-old Bryce, who took “all the marbles” with him back to their grandparents’ home in Tremonton.
