For the sixth time in a row and the eighth time overall, Logan Regional Hospital was recognized as one of Watson Health’s top 100 U.S. hospitals.
“I think with anything we get recognized for publicly, the recognition really should go to all of our caregivers,” said Kyle Hansen, the CEO and administrator of Logan Regional Hospital. “That includes our nurses, physicians, technicians and volunteers — all the people that work here and make these types of things possible.”
The hospital was recognized as one of the 2018 IBM Watson Health Top 100 Hospitals (previously known as Truven Health Analytics Top 100 Hospitals). Hansen says this recognition is more meaningful than most.
“We’re not out there trying to earn awards, but within the health care industry there are lots of organizations that are out there trying to give awards,” Hansen said. “Many of them are arrangements where they notify you that you’ve won an award, and if you’d like to market their award, send them a check for $40,000 and they’ll happily let you promote that.”
That’s not the case with Watson Health, Hansen said. Logan Regional didn’t have to apply for the award or pay to claim it. Watson Health’s findings are based on publicly reported data.
“Basically everybody is in the running,” Hansen said. “It’s our data out there compared to everybody else, and we’ve been fortunate to rise to the top the last number of years.”
The ranking is based on a wide variety of factors.
“It’s not just the typical quality measures, that typically for hospitals are things like infection rate and readmissions or complications,” Hansen said. “It also takes into account things like patient satisfaction scores and our costs.”
According to Watson Health’s website, their metrics also include average length of stay for similar types of care and the average throughput for the emergency department.
Hansen said Logan Regional falls into the medium-size hospital category. While 100 hospitals are honored in total, there are only 20 spots in the medium category. There are about 1,000 hospitals of that size in the U.S., Hansen said, which puts Logan Regional among the top 2 percent of hospitals of a similar size.
“We’re only able to do these great things because we have great people who work here,” Hansen said. “The recognition is really to them.”
