A 27-year-old bicyclist was seriously injured Tuesday afternoon after he was run down by a Ford Escape, whose driver was experiencing a medical condition affecting his vision, police said.

The accident occurred just after 3:30 p.m on 1400 North just west of 400 West. Witnesses told police the driver of the SUV was driving on the far right side of the road all the way down 1400 North and nearly hit the man on the bike at 200 West, where the double lane road merges into a single lane.

Budge said both the SUV and bike stopped at 400 West for pedestrians, with the bike continuing ahead first when he was able. However, when the driver of the SUV resumed travel, he ran over the bicycle and its rider, causing injury to the cyclist’s head and upper body.

The victim was transported to Logan Regional Hospital and was reportedly talking with medical staff before he was flown to a hospital outside of the valley for continued treatment of his injuries.

The investigation is ongoing, citations are pending, and police plan to notify the Utah State Drivers License Division.
