They met at a beach party at Thousand Steps Beach in South Laguna, California — he was a lifeguard and she was a gorgeous surfer girl. It only took eight months until they decided to share their lives together. After a reluctant blessing from Mercedes’ father, Heinz Friedrich (she was almost 18), they were married on March 1, 1969. Their adventures as newlyweds landed them in both Colorado and Alaska, where they fell in love with the outdoors, immersed themselves in the hippie culture, and, while in Crested Butte, Colorado, connected with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Joining the LDS church was their saving grace, and led them on their path to peace and happiness. Their last trip down the Alaska Highway in December, 1973 (still a dirt road), included a rocking horse strapped to the top of a 1965 two-wheel drive Dodge pickup, with the first addition to their family, Trina, in between them. They returned to Colorado where they had another girl, Alison. They eventually settled happily in Mendon, Utah, where they added four more children to their family – Forrest, Sarah, Andrea and Kade. Life just kept getting better. Kim and Mercedes are blessed with 13 grandchildren who keep them young at heart and full of laughter. Trina (Apedaile) has five children – Adeline (21), Alden (19), Alisabeth (16), Ava (13) and Aunie (9). Alison has three – Dacia (21), Gabrielle (20), and Soren (16). Forrest has two – Megan (8) and Spencer (2). Sarah has two – Bergen (9) and Odin (7). Then Andrea has her one and only – Fiona (7). It is no secret that the grandkids are the light and love of “Nana Cedes” and Grandpa Kim. Their adventures include as many family gatherings as is logically feasible with such a large and colorful crowd, and have recently included various overseas trips – with destinations such as Petra and Machu Picchu next on their list. Thank you for teaching us to love and live life to the fullest, mom and dad. We are proud to be your children. An open house celebration of their amazing 50th anniversary will be held on Friday March 1, 2019, at the Mendon Station from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. All friends are welcome.
