Bates' 80th

We are happy to be celebrating the 80th Birthday of Lynn Reed Bates. He was born April 19, 1939 in Rexburg, Idaho to Floyd and May Bates. He was the youngest of four children.

Lynn attended Adams Elementary, Madison Junior High and graduated in 1958 from Madison High School. He loved sports and was on the track, basketball and football teams.

He attended Ricks College where he obtained an associates in electronics technology. While attending school he met his soon to be wife Karen Cobbley and they were married in the Idaho Falls Temple on 19th of November 1959.

While living in Idaho Falls they had 3 children, Jeffery, Julie and Jared, while Lynn was working for a TV repair shop.

With a new business opportunity, Lynn moved his family to Smithfield, where he was part owner of Wescor. He later began working for USU Space Dynamics Lab (SDL). His career with SDL would take him all over the country and see many rocket and shuttle launches.

While living in Smithfield, Lynn and Karen added two more children, Ginger and Ryan, to their family.

Lynn continued working at SDL while he and Karen purchased the Plant Peddler Floral located, at the time, in the Cache Valley Mall.

While deep in his career and business venture, Lynn faced tough times when his wife Karen was diagnosed with cancer that caused them to sell their business and ultimately take his sweet wife of 42 years back home again. Tragedy would again hit when his oldest son, Jeffery, passed away from cancer a year later.

Lynn retired after a long and successful career from SDL, where he loved working on many important projects alongside great co-workers and friends.

Shortly after Karen’s passing, he spent some time helping on the Nauvoo Temple Construction project in 2001.

In 2002, Lynn married Sherrie Daw of Shelley, Idaho. The two of them currently live in Smithfield, where Lynn loves to be a part of the local Wood Carvers Club, as well as go fishing, build things and tinker in the garage.

Lynn has his family living nearby with 13 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

We will be having an Open House for his birthday on Saturday, April 13 at the LDS meeting house, 189 N. 100 East, Smithfield, from 5-8 p.m. All family and friends that know Lynn are welcome to come wish him a Happy Birthday.
