2018 Rumble the Rockies riders

Driving down a quiet, peaceful highway, a low rumble can be heard in the distance. The rumbling becomes a bone-shaking growl. Not one or two, but dozens of experienced bikers emerge taking the road as part of their life. These bikers are somehow different. They are not the typical stereotype of mean bearded, grizzled bikers. These bikers are some of the most kind, and giving individuals you could ever hope to run across. Strapped to each motorcycle is a soft, fuzzy Teddy Bear, not an everyday accessory for a biker. These lovable Teddy Bears represent a ride of love and hope. They are gifts to be given out at Christmas. This group of bikers is riding for Rumble The Rockies.

Rumble The Rockies is a charity run for Toys For Tots and needy families. Four years ago, Dirk Stucki, president of EMS, was enjoying a beautiful holiday evening Christmas Caroling on a horse-drawn sleigh and happened to see many families who had fallen on tough times and did not have enough for the holidays. It was then that Rumble The Rockies was born. He saw this as an opportunity for a group of bikers to raise money for charity. Many people have come forward and joined the committee to help with this wonderful cause. This is not the first time this group of bikers has given back. Last year they were challenged to participate in the Polar Plunge. They had the largest group to enter and won a two-night stay at Rendezvous Beach. They donated the prize to be raffled off with all proceeds going to charity. Giving back is a core principle of this group of bikers.

The Fourth Annual, Rumble the Rockies Teddy Bear Ride is set to take place on July 20th. Approximately 30 bikes and 60 riders will take part. Riders can register on Rumble The Rockies Facebook page. The 171-mile ride will begin in Montpelier at the Oregon Trail Center, kickstands up at 10:00 a.m. and end in St. Charles, Idaho at the city park.

There will be a burger and salmon fry at St. Charles City Park at approximately 5:00 p.m. after the ride. The community is encouraged to attend this fun-filled charitable evening! There will be raffles and drawings for prizes, including a rifle. Bring a Teddy Bear or any other stuffed animal to donate. All proceeds go to Toys For Tots and families in need.

Toys For Tots is a program run by the United States Marine Corps Reserve, which distributes toys to children whose parents cannot afford to buy them gifts for Christmas. The program was founded in 1974 by reservist Major Bill Hendricks. He was inspired by his wife Diane, who at Christmas wanted to donate a Raggedy Ann doll to a child, but could not find an organization to do so. Major Hendricks got a group of Marine Reservists together and coordinated and collected over 5000 toys the first year. Their efforts were so successful that in 1948 Toys For Tots was launched as a National campaign. Over the past 70 years, tens of thousands of volunteers have distributed 548 million toys to 251 million less fortunate children.

It is groups like Rumble The Rockies that keep Toys For Tots successful. It is with a grateful heart that we thank these riders for their compassion and sense of community. “Giving is not just about making a decision. It’s about making a difference,” Kathy Calvin.
