A Hyde Park woman died and two men were injured in a head-on collision Tuesday afternoon in Sardine Canyon, just north of the Cache County line.

The victim was identified as 87-year-old Bonnie Joy Reeder.

Utah Highway Patrol Lt. Lee Perry said Martin G. Reeder, 88, was driving a silver Chevy truck northbound on U.S. Highway 89/91 when he crossed over into the southbound lane at one of the openings in the concrete barrier. One vehicle in the southbound lane was able to swerve out of the way, but 32-year-old Bryan Alvey of Cottonwood Heights was unable to avoid the collision and his black Toyota SUV was struck by the truck. Responders were called out to the accident at about 2:20 p.m.

According to Perry, Reeder was transported to Logan Regional Hospital in serious condition. His wife, Bonnie, was a passenger in the truck. Her heart stopped at the scene of the crash and CPR was performed by medical personnel; they continued care while she was airlifted to Ogden Regional Hospital, where she was later pronounced deceased.

Alvey, who was pinned in his vehicle, was also transported by ambulance, reportedly in good condition, Perry said.

Sardine Canyon was closed for nearly two hours while local emergency personnel and an AirMed helicopter team tended to the patients and law enforcement cleaned up the crash site.

Perry said troopers are considering fatigue or a possible medical condition as potential causes for the crash, which remains under investigation.
