Logan City Police have verified that Alexander Whipple was detained by Cache County Sheriff's deputies just after 3 p.m. Saturday afternoon, however 5-year-old Elizabeth Jessica Shelley — a child reported missing overnight and believed to be with Whipple — has not yet been found.

While investigators are questioning Whipple and attempting to gain more information about what happened, Capt. Curtis Hooley said multiple teams of law enforcement officers are combing the neighborhoods surrounding the child's home.

Officers and search-and-rescue volunteers are going door-to-door, talking with residents and searching homes and garages, inside and out.

Additional volunteers have been carefully searching a canal located in the vicinity, with no apparent results. At this point, only the family home and the Bear River Charter have been marked with police tape.

Police say Whipple and the child were reported missing at about 10 a.m. when family members woke up and discovered them both gone.
