A former Logan man who is serving 10 years to life in the Utah State Prison on a 2006 conviction of rape of a child returned to a 1st District courtroom, where he now faces new allegations against him.

David Ronald Dawson, 50, was charged in March with six counts of sodomy on a child. His case was amended Monday to include six counts of aggravated sexual abuse of a child and two counts of rape of a child, all of which allegedly took place in about 2005.

A preliminary hearing was scheduled for Monday on the sodomy charges, but Dawson chose to waive his right to that hearing instead of requiring the prosecution to present evidence in the case.

A July 29 hearing has been set on the new charges, and at that time, Dawson can decide if he wants to go ahead with a preliminary hearing or waive his rights in those cases as well.
