Residents in Cache Valley have a simpler way to handling their Social Security business without having to drive to Ogden office.

The Social Security Administration is offering a video conferencing service that connects Cache Valley residents with the nearest SSA office in Ogden from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursdays at the Logan Department of Workforce Services, 180 N. 100 West.

“It’s an efficient and effective way for them to get service without driving to the Ogden office,” said Mickie Douglas, SSA public affairs specialist at the Salt Lake office. “Try it there and visit it.”

According to Douglas, residents would have access to many of the services available to them at the office. Many services are also available online, such as applying for retirement, applying for disability or Medicare benefits and requesting a replacement Medicare card, among other services.

During video conferences, SSA employees at the Ogden office will be available to answer questions and guide residents on transactions.

If documentation is needed for a transaction, a machine to scan and send the documents would be available. The machine might not be able to read all of the documents, according to Douglas, but she recommends residents attempt the video conferencing before driving to Ogden.

“They should go there first, and then whatever the services they’re after, they connect with Ogden and Ogden can advise them on how to handle it,” Douglas said.

Residents can go to the DWS office and let the officer at the door know they would like to video conference the SSA and the officer will give further instructions. The service is a first-come first-served basis.

Since the video conferencing is connected to the Ogden office, it will not be available during holidays or any Social Security Office closures. The next scheduled service day for the video conference is set for July 11.
