Petty Officer 1st Class Brendan Edwards, a 2008 graduate of Logan High School, joined the Navy for the opportunity to see the world, travel and leave his home state.
Now, nine years later, Edwards is currently deployed with the U.S. Navy’s 5th Fleet at Naval Support Activity Bahrain, in the Arabian Gulf region.
“The most exciting part of serving in this area is living in this culture and experiencing the different way of life out here,” Edwards said.
U.S. 5th Fleet directs naval operations to ensure maritime security and stability in the Central Region, which connects the Mediterranean Sea and Pacific Ocean through the western Indian Ocean. They work with partner nations to ensure freedom of navigation and the free flow of commerce in international waterways.
NSA Bahrain enables the forward operations and responsiveness of U.S. 5th Fleet and allied forces in support of Navy Region Europe, Africa and Southwest Asia’s mission to provide services to the fleet, warfighter and family.
“We tie the big picture together so that other commands can achieve their mission,” Edwards said.
Though there are many ways for sailors to earn distinction in their command, community, and career, Edwards is most proud of advancing in rank.
“I did not think I would be in this long,” Edwards said. “I thought I would have done four years and gotten out.”
