A free seven-week course for stepfamilies will begin at The Family Place next week.

The class entitled “Smart Steps for Stepfamilies” is designed for remarried couples, stepparents or cohabitating couples to better learn how to successfully parent stepchildren.

Concurrent classes for children ages 6-18 are offered at the same time as well.

“The parents are learning about communication, how to build a stronger relationship between the two of them, how to parent stepchildren, how to handle stress and things like that,” said Jennifer Daly, the education director at The Family Place. “Then with the kids, they are learning about conflict resolution, they are learning about how to handle their own emotions and how to talk to their parents when they have problems.”

Daly said all the classes stress that stepfamilies are normal and that they are not alone.

The course begins on Monday and is held weekly from 5:45 to 8 p.m. at The Family Place, 1525 N. 2000 West, Logan, until July 15. Nursery for children 5 and under is available and dinner is provided.
