The Pirates travel to Bear Lake on Wednesday, Jan. 15, for their first district dual. Schools in attendance will be Bear Lake, West Side, Aberdeen and Grace. It will be great opportunity to see how the Pirates match up against district opponents.
West Side attended the Braveheart Duals Tournament at Ben Lomond High School in Ogden, Utah, on Saturday, Jan. 4. There were seven schools in attendance: Ben Lomond, Logan, Bonneville, Park City, Ogden, Utah Military Academy, and West Side.
In Ogden “West Side did amazing, despite missing three key wrestlers,” said Coach Legrand Leavitt. “As a team, we beat Ben Lomond, Park City, Utah Military Academy, and Bonneville. The Pirates narrowly lost to Ogden High School, 36-42.”
“West Side is also very proud of being able to leave the tournament with six placers in the top three spots.”
Zach Groll (senior, 182 lbs) took first place and went undefeated, pinning all of his opponents.
Connor Robinson (sophomore, HWT) lost just one match to place second in the tournament as did Ben Yancey (sophomore, 132 lbs). “He has come so far in the last three weeks,” said Leavitt of Yancey. “This was a big success for him.”
Jed Hurren (freshman, 106 lbs), Fielding Mumford (sophomore, 138 lbs) and Andrew Olinger (junior, 160 lbs) all placed third.
“Jed usually wrestles 96 lbs, but the lowest weight division in Utah is 106,” Leavitt said. “Jed’s opponents weighed up to 10 pounds more than him. Jed did great only losing one match and ended up taking third place overall.”
“Congratulations to all the wrestlers,” said Leavitt. “We had a great tournament and I am excited to see many of our young wrestlers really making some amazing progress.”
