PROVO, Utah — Frankie Ferrari had a career-high 23 points as San Francisco defeated BYU 77-71 on Thursday night.

"The outcome of the game was obviously disappointing," BYU head coach Dave Rose said. "I thought our guys played hard. I thought for the most part until the last eight minutes that we played pretty smart and that we were dialed in together."

Ferrari hit 9 of 12 shots. He added seven assists and six rebounds.

Jordan Ratinho had 11 points for San Francisco (21-6, 9-4 West Coast Conference), which earned its fourth straight win. Matt McCarthy added 10 points.

Yoeli Childs had 28 points and 14 rebounds for the Cougars (18-11, 10-4), whose five-game winning streak was broken. TJ Haws added 25 points. Gavin Baxter had 8 points, seven rebounds and five blocks.

"San Francisco is a great team, and I thought they made shots down the stretch," Haws said. "We had a hard time getting the ball in the basket. When you’re up 13 you should be able to defend to win that game. I’ll give credit to San Francisco; they made big shots. We went on a run that second half and just couldn’t keep it on them, and they made big shots."

The Dons improve to 2-0 against the Cougars for the season. San Francisco defeated BYU 82-63 on Jan. 19. San Francisco matches up against Santa Clara on the road on Saturday. BYU takes on Gonzaga on the road on Saturday. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m., and the game will be broadcast on ESPN.

"One thing these guys have done is they've been resilient all year," Rose said. "And we'll get back in the gym tomorrow and then head up to Spokane and swing away up there against the No. 2 team in the country and see how we do."

Jake Toolson lifts Utah Valley past Chicago State

OREM, Utah — Jake Toolson had 25 points as Utah Valley rolled past Chicago State 103-71 Thursday night, which was "Salute to Service" night at the UCCU Center.

 "Having military families tonight was awesome," said Utah Valley head coach Mark Pope. "I am proud of our guys. We shot the living daylights out of the ball in the first half. We shot our way to some energy on the floor. We have a big game Saturday and we're looking forward to coming in and playing better."

Toolson shot 6 for 9 from deep.

Richard Harward had 19 points and 16 rebounds for Utah Valley (18-8, 7-4 Western Athletic Conference). Conner Toolson added 13 points. Isaiah White had 11 points for the home team.

It was the first time this season Utah Valley scored more than 100 points.

Utah Valley posted a season-high 16 3-pointers.

Utah Valley scored 54 points in the first half, a season high for the team.

Rob Shaw had 15 points for the Cougars (3-24, 0-12), who have now lost 16 straight games. Anthony Harris added 15 points and five steals. Patrick Szpir had 15 points and six assists.

The Wolverines improve to 2-0 against the Cougars on the season. Utah Valley defeated Chicago State 74-60 on Jan. 26. Utah Valley takes on UMKC at home Saturday at 7 p.m. The game will be streamed live on the WAC Digital Network. Chicago State matches up against Seattle on the road Saturday.

"Our goal is to win the rest of our games," said Pope. "We are focusing on getting better. We have to get better. We have to get every rep to get to our goal."

Marin scores 20 to lead Southern Utah to victory

CEDAR CITY, Utah — Dre Marin had a career-high 20 points as Southern Utah defeated Eastern Washington 76-62 on Thursday night.

Marin made 5 of 7 3-pointers. He added seven rebounds.

Jacob Calloway had 17 points for Southern Utah (13-12, 8-8 Big Sky Conference), which earned its sixth straight home victory. Harrison Butler added 12 points and nine rebounds. Andre Adams had 10 points and nine rebounds for the home team.

"It was a good 40 minutes for us," SUU head coach Todd Simon said. "Our identity needs to be where we're becoming a good defensive team, holding the other team's percentage down, and we put a huge emphasis on rebounding and taking care of the ball. And we did those things for the most part tonight."

Jesse Hunt had 19 points, nine rebounds and three blocks for the Eagles (10-16, 8-7). Tyler Kidd added 17 points.

The Thunderbirds evened the season series against the Eagles with the win. Eastern Washington defeated Southern Utah 82-79 on Feb. 2.

Southern Utah plays Idaho at home Saturday at 2 p.m. The game will be broadcast on Pluto TV Channel 236.

Eastern Washington plays Northern Arizona on the road on Saturday.
