Galaxy Real Salt Lake Soccer

Salt Lake midfielder Albert Rusnak (11) controls the ball as Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder Ema Boateng (24) defends during an MLS soccer game Saturday in Sandy, Utah.

Emmanuel Boateng found the inside of the net for what turned out to be the game-winner in the 74th minute and Los Angeles earned its first win of the year 2-1 against Real Salt Lake on Saturday night at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy.

Boateng’s goal was set up by Romain Alessandrini who drew the defense around him on the right side of the box before firing a pass to the opposite side to a streaking Boateng who beat goalkeeper Nick Rimando.

Alessandrini also assisted on the Galaxy’s (1-2-0) first goal, which tied the score at one in the 69th minute. Alessandrini found Romney with a cross to the middle of the box, who then fired a left-footed shot just under the crossbar.

Real Salt Lake (0-2-1) took an early lead in the 18th minute after a goal by Yura Movsisyan. Movsisyan took a high arching into the box by Albert Rusnák and headed it through.

The match turned on its head near the end of halftime when RSL midfielder Kyle Beckerman was sent off after a late challenge near midfield for his second yellow card, forcing the hosts to play a man down the rest of the match.

RSL will now travel to the east coast to face off against the New York Red Bulls at Red Bull Arena next Saturday at 4 p.m.

The last meeting between the two teams came last June at Rio Tinto Stadium, a game that saw the claret-and-cobalt walk away 2-1 victors courtesy of goals from Yura Movsisyan and Jordan Allen. RSL is 5-5-8 all-time against the Red Bulls.
