This week marks the end of the 2019 high school softball season for 4A schools, including the defending state champions, the Bear River Bears. The first round of the state playoffs was held last Saturday, May 11, at BRHS, advancing the Bears to Thursday’s tournament in Spanish Fork May 16-18.

The Bears hosted the first round of the state playoffs last Saturday, first dominating Payson High 10-0 in six innings.

Next up the Bears took a two hour break before taking on Canyon View High allowing the Falcons from Cedar City a 2-0 lead going into the bottom of the second inning. The Lady Bears shut them down on the scoreboard the rest of the game and came out victorious 10-2.

A steady stream of runs in the second, third, fifth and sixth innings came from the Bears’ top hitters including senior Ashley Hess hitting two doubles while going 2-for-4 at the plate. Kati Gibbs went 3-for-4 with a double while older sister Kodi Gibbs had her own double going 2-for-3. Sophomore Olivia Taylor went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.

In the pitchers circle Bailey Theurer earned the win striking out six and giving up just five hits. Defensively the Bears only committed three errors to Canyon Views’ five. The Bears out hit the Falcons 13-3.
