It was a long time coming, and the Lady Bears did not disappoint.
After playing their first six games on the road, the Bear River girls basketball team finally got to play in front of their home fans last week when they hosted Stansbury on Friday, coming away with a hard-fought 50-47 win to the crowd’s delight.
Leading 10-5 after the first quarter, the Bears found themselves down 24-20 at halftime after a second-quarter Stallions surge. Their halftime adjustments worked as they outscored the visitors 30-23 in the second half to seal the deal.
Leading the Bear River offense was Jenna LaCroix, who put up 17 points; and Gracie Riley, who scored 14. Riley also grabbed 11 rebounds to record a double-double, while Bentley Lorimer dished out three assists and Lexie Westmoreland had five steals.
The girls are now being rewarded for their long road trip to start the season with six consecutive home games. They were set to host rivals Box Elder on Tuesday (after the Leader went to press) in their last game of 2022.
Two more nonconference games await to start 2023, against Salem Hills on Jan. 4 and Union on Jan. 6, before the always-grueling Region 11 schedule begins.
